Lush says goodbye to social media

The cosmetics company Lush has said goodbye to all social media channels on Black Friday. It is estimated that the company could lose a hefty sum of 13.3 million US dollars as a result of this move. According to The Guardian, the company’s Facebook and Instagram accounts had over 10.6 million followers.

The question quickly arises, why all this? The revelations of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen were the decisive wake-up call. Lush felt obliged to take this step in the face of “overwhelming evidence” that the use of social networks was putting people at risk. In an interview with the Guardian, CEO Mark Constantine said he was not prepared to expose his customers to such harm.

Saying goodbye to social media is nothing new for Lush. Already in 2019, the company said goodbye to social media Facebook and Instagram in the UK. In the pandemic, however, Lush returned. Now, however, this decision is supposed to be once and for all.
